Young Guns Fire to Give Ashorne Victory PDF Print E-mail

A fine hundred opening partnership between Sharples and Duncan Whitehood set Ashorne on course for victory in response to Kenilworth’s total of 182 for 6. The home side were made to work hard for their early runs with tight bowling from Vice Capt Phil Whitehead who was rewarded with an early wicket bowling Orton.

Sharples was accurate without luck but gradually the home side got to grips with the pace of the pitch and began to attack. It took a brilliant caught and bowled by Paul Hedges to put the breaks on with newcomer Bevan also impressing. Skipper Jones bowled Beth Lucas who was the first female cricketer Ashorne had encountered in League cricket. A hard hitting contribution by home batsmen Gough (73 not out) lifted the total to 182. Young Tom Husselby on his return to the Ashorne league team added variety to the bowling attack with his leg spin backed up by superb fielding from Nat Mockler and Luke Sharples whose direct hit ran out Beggs.

Ashorne’s openers were in imperious form and Sharples hit 15 boundaries before being caught in the deep for 79. Duncan Whitehead was equally dominating and his unbeaten 70 was a masterclass of skill and concentration. Husselby (5 not out) was there at the end with the oponer and Ashorne’s victory by 8 wickets was achieved with 10 overs to spare.

Ashorne won by 8 wickets
