Long Itch Too Street Wise For Ashorne PDF Print E-mail

The experience of Martin Rawbone and the spin of Clark were Ashorne’s undoing in a hard fought and feisty contest between these old rivals. Rawbone’s 80 run contribution with the bat and his fine catch to dismiss Hendy were key moments in the match. Ashorne’s bowlers could not quite apply enough control to restrict the visitors scoring. Colin Reading’s excellent 10 over spell which was rewarded with only 1 wicket did not truly reflect his searching consistency.

Sharples and Hendy battled hard and picked up a wicket apiece and young Phil Whitehead two but Long Itch’s total of 191 for 6 was a formidable target. Clarke (33) and Jack (26) took advantage of a couple of dropped catches, as Ashorne did not have one of their better days in the field.

Despite diligent progress by openers Moon and Duncan Whitehead in reply the visitors kept up a tight and testing line. Wood was rewarded with Whitehead’s (17) dismissal to a remarkable instinctive one handed catch at short leg by Jack. The introduction of spinner Clark then proved decisive as Ashworth and Moon strived to break free from his nagging length with little success. The pair put on a 42 run partnership until Moon (23) fell to another excellent catch in the deep. Hendy (25) then accelerated the scoring with some lusty blows before falling to Rawbone’s catch. Ashworth (40) was bowled by Grindall as Ashorne began to fall further behind the asking rate. Sharples (14n.o) nursed the total to respectability with the help of Tom Lewis (9) and Mark Reading (2n.o) as the home side finished on 142 for 5.

Amazingly Clark finished wicketless but his colleagues had done more than enough to secure victory by 49 runs.

Long Itchington won by 49 runs
