Ashorne got back on track after consecutive defeats to dispose of FISCC in a competitive encounter between the two newly promoted teams. The gamble by the visitors to insert the home side misfired as openers Moon (35) and Duncan Whitehead (61) put on a partnership of 104.Whitehead’s maiden half century was a mixture of self-discipline and assured stroke play and in tandem with the dogged Moon gave Ashorne a solid platform.
Glover broke the partnership and Frank Jones (9) was caught on the boundary as the batsmen looked to accelerate the scoring. The unlucky Sharples (0) lost his wicket to Glover via a leading edge that cannoned off his helmet to give a return catch to the bowler. This piece of misfortune brought Ashworth to the crease and this talented cricketer put his foot to the floor and his 30 runs came in quick time before being excellently caught at long off. Mark Reading (9n.o) intelligently rotated the strike to push Ashorne’s total to 165 for 5 with P Whitehead 2 not out.
In reply Mckee lost his off stump to the pacey Sharples to give the early initiative to Ashorne. The bowlers then rammed home the advantage thanks to the truly exceptional Hendy who decimated FISCC’s top and middle order in a ten over spell half of which were maidens with 4 well deserved wickets and only 16 runs conceded. Frank Jones (1for 30) removed the dangerous Kane (26) and Colin Reading took the key wickets of Ashley (26) and Kemp (23) as FISCC limped to 60 for 5. Ashorne won by 6 runs.
