Bad Day At The Office For Ashorne PDF Print E-mail

League leaders Rowington handed out a lesson to Ashorne in this Division II encounter. Heavy morning rain gave a clear advantage to the bowlers who got first use of the pitch and when Matt Ashworth of Ashorne lost the toss Rowington had an easy decision to make.
Last weekend’s double centurion Jack Jones was removed 2nd ball having imperiously dispatched the first ball of the match for four. His opening partner Duncan Whitehead joined him in the pavilion by the end of the first over-Oldfield claiming both wickets. Ashworth (0) succumbed by the end of the third over reducing Ashorne to 6 for 3.

The home side never recovered. Sharples (17), Mark Reading (13) and Paul Hedges (15) battled manfully against a searching examination by Oldfield    (2 for 20), Gilbert (2 for 24), Shaw (3 for 15) and Clarke (2 for 27).

The Rowington bowlers backed up by an excellent display in the field applied an iron grip which they never let go. Frank Jones’ two massive sixes in an innings of 19 was the only ray of sunshine on a grim day for the home side.

The meagre total of 95 was never going to be enough and despite Luke Sharples’ valiant spell of 3 for 29 Rowington cantered home in only 22 overs for the loss of 4 wickets. E Gilbert finished up with 27 not out.

Rowington won by 6 wickets
