Ashorne took the points from the inaugural match played between these two clubs at the delightful Ebrington ground.

Jack Jones – leading Ashorne in the absence of regular skipper Matt Ashworth – won the toss and elected to bat on what looked, and indeed turned out to be, an absolute ‘belter’ of a batting track. Jones, himself, opened the innings with Duncan Whitehead in a 36 run opening partnership. When Whitehead fell to a Page bouncer, Jones was joined by the in-form Luke Sharples.

Before falling lbw to Evans, Sharples made a stylish 46, in an excellent 143 run partnership with Jones, who was starting to stamp some authority over the innings. Mark Reading then joined his skipper in the run feast. Reading and Jones compiled a partnership of 112, with both players demonstrating an excellent range of strokeplay.

Jones passed his first ton of the season – finally being dismissed for 115

During the partnership, Jones passed his first ton of the season – finally being dismissed for 115 – a superb effort punctuated with 13 fours and a solitary straight driven six, Reading perished in the final over – run out for a quality run-a-ball 36, as Ashorne totalled a competitive 265-5 from their 45 overs.

Ebrington commenced their response against a visiting attack shorn of their usual new ball specialist, as paceman Hendy was nursing a thigh strain. Phil Whitehead and the ever-dependable Frank Jones shared new ball duties and delivered accurate spells which put the home side behind the clock. Herbert fell to a beautiful Whitehead in-ducker for 14 and Gibson fell to the same bowler for 17, whilst Frank Jones accounted for Evans for 19. Chris Cooper, meanwhile, was quietly going about building a patient half century which featured some excellent cover driven and square cut boundaries. Sharples was then introduced into the attack by skipper Jack Jones and although he went for in excess of 5 runs per over, he had sufficient penetration to take wickets – including the key scalp of dangerman Cooper for a high quality 56 and then Pall and Josh for 24 and 22 respectively. Sharples and Whitehead’s efforts bowled Ashorne to victory by 58 runs – well deserved after their fine batting display, but the home side took maximum batting points themselves, finally being dismissed for 207 themselves, leaving Ashorne victorious by 58 runs.
