Ashorne completed a rare and deserved double against Shipston II in this penultimate league game of the season. The home side have learned a lot of lessons in their first season in Division II and their players delivered when it mattered. The Whitehead brothers and the father and son combination of Colin and Mark Reading made vital contributions in victory.
The experience of Martin Rawbone and the spin of Clark were Ashorne’s undoing in a hard fought and feisty contest between these old rivals. Rawbone’s 80 run contribution with the bat and his fine catch to dismiss Hendy were key moments in the match. Ashorne’s bowlers could not quite apply enough control to restrict the visitors scoring. Colin Reading’s excellent 10 over spell which was rewarded with only 1 wicket did not truly reflect his searching consistency.
A couple of key incidents turned the game for TG in a more evenly contested match than the final score suggests. The visitors were put into bat on a damp slow wicket thanks to the week’s heavy rain and Ashorne’s bowlers took full advantage. The fiery Sharples had Kahn (11) caught down the leg side by wicketkeeper Moon with the score on 17.
Ashorne took the points from the inaugural match played between these two clubs at the delightful Ebrington ground.
Jack Jones – leading Ashorne in the absence of regular skipper Matt Ashworth – won the toss and elected to bat on what looked, and indeed turned out to be, an absolute ‘belter’ of a batting track. Jones, himself, opened the innings with Duncan Whitehead in a 36 run opening partnership. When Whitehead fell to a Page bouncer, Jones was joined by the in-form Luke Sharples.
As some of you found out on Tuesday some Turkish muppet used a security flaw in the website code to gain access to the admin area and disable to site.
I have updated the software as reported below and all is back to normal.
All the intruder did was put the site offline and reset the administrator password so i couldnt get back in.
Ashorne got back on track after consecutive defeats to dispose of FISCC in a competitive encounter between the two newly promoted teams. The gamble by the visitors to insert the home side misfired as openers Moon (35) and Duncan Whitehead (61) put on a partnership of 104.Whitehead’s maiden half century was a mixture of self-discipline and assured stroke play and in tandem with the dogged Moon gave Ashorne a solid platform.
League leaders Rowington handed out a lesson to Ashorne in this Division II encounter. Heavy morning rain gave a clear advantage to the bowlers who got first use of the pitch and when Matt Ashworth of Ashorne lost the toss Rowington had an easy decision to make.
The longest day of the summer proved Shipston’s hardest as Ashorne claimed their first ever victory over their opponents. Despite the home side losing a clutch of players to their first team did not lessen Ashorne’s achievements after being invited to bat first on a dank and wet afternoon. Much depended on the mindset of Ashorne’s batsmen who had capitulated feebly the week before and on this occasion they were certainly up for the challenge.
Sri Lanka were reduced to 292 all out by Pakistan on the first day of their first Test but hit back by reducing the visitors to 15-2 by the close of play.
