Ashorne got back on track after consecutive defeats to dispose of FISCC in a competitive encounter between the two newly promoted teams. The gamble by the visitors to insert the home side misfired as openers Moon (35) and Duncan Whitehead (61) put on a partnership of 104.Whitehead’s maiden half century was a mixture of self-discipline and assured stroke play and in tandem with the dogged Moon gave Ashorne a solid platform.

As the 2010 summer and associated cricket season fast approaches, Ashorne and Moreton Morrell Cricket Club is turning its attention to its perennial battle with the maintenance of its picturesque ground.

It is fair to say that most of our grass cutting equipment has seen better days and, as such, the Club is commencing a major fund raising campaign with the ultimate target of buying a replacement outfield mower and a heavy roller for the pitch.

Our first fund raising events will be:

FUND RAISING CAR WASH

This will take place in the car park of Ashorne Village Hall on Sunday 11th April 2010 between 9am and 12 Noon.

Club members will be available to wash the winter grit from your car, whilst you relax with a bacon roll and coffee in the Hall itself!

Then, by kind permission of Mr Darling, the Club is planning to host three Car Boot Sales, on the cricket field, throughout the summer. So, turn out your garage or shed, fill up your boot and come along on the following dates:

CAR BOOT SALES 2010

MONDAY 3rd MAY

Gates generally open at 0730 hours and light breakfast refreshments will be available in the pavilion

As the season approaches, the Club is always on the lookout for new PLAYING and supporting members. Playing membership is open to all ages from aged 13 upwards and to players of all skills and abilities.

We play competitive League cricket on Saturdays, as members of the Cotswold Hills League and friendly matches on Sundays, throughout the summer. Anyone interested in playing, please contact either of the following:

Chairman: Richard Moon (01926 651640)

Saturday Captain: Jack Jones (07841 901157)

Saturday Vice Captain: Phillip Whitehead (07772 032986)

Sunday Captain: Jon Lambdon (07814 278904)

Sunday Vice Captain: Shane Mockler (01926 651508)

Ashorne completed a rare and deserved double against Shipston II in this penultimate league game of the season. The home side have learned a lot of lessons in their first season in Division II and their players delivered when it mattered. The Whitehead brothers and the father and son combination of Colin and Mark Reading made vital contributions in victory.

The experience of Martin Rawbone and the spin of Clark were Ashorne’s undoing in a hard fought and feisty contest between these old rivals. Rawbone’s 80 run contribution with the bat and his fine catch to dismiss Hendy were key moments in the match. Ashorne’s bowlers could not quite apply enough control to restrict the visitors scoring. Colin Reading’s excellent 10 over spell which was rewarded with only 1 wicket did not truly reflect his searching consistency.

A couple of key incidents turned the game for TG in a more evenly contested match than the final score suggests. The visitors were put into bat on a damp slow wicket thanks to the week’s heavy rain and Ashorne’s bowlers took full advantage. The fiery Sharples had Kahn (11) caught down the leg side by wicketkeeper Moon with the score on 17.
